About Gwendolyn Phillips

Gwendolyn Boyd Phillips has been a member of the Beta Chapter of NSPDK for over 24 years. She was instrumental in the chartering of the UMazing Zeta Iota Chapter in 2022. Hailing from Orlando, Florida she graduated from Jones High School in 1951 and went on to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU) graduating in 1955 with a BA Degree in English. Her teaching career started in Florida where she taught high school English for 8 years. Soror Gwen then returned to FAMU to earn a MS in Guidance and Counseling. She was a School Counselor for one year in the Philippians due to her husband Joe’s deployment. Upon returning to the United States, Soror Gwen returned to teaching in California. While living on the west coast she completed additional studies at the University of California, Davis. In 1974, Soror Gwen arrived in gorgeous Prince George's County and began working as a counselor at Benjamin Foulois Junior High School.  Seven years later, it was on to Potomac High School to teach English, and from there she moved on to Bowie High School as counselor. Soror Gwen rounded out her career as a Pupil Personnel Worker. In 2002, she retired from Prince George's County Public Schools after an illustrious 47 years of service. For a long time, Soror Gwen dreamed of a NSPDK chapter in Prince George’s County. She held fast to this dream for many years, and in the Fall of 2021 her dream finally started to become reality. She worked tirelessly with the current Zeta Iota Chapter President, Stacy Alexander, to receive approval for an interest group. On May 22, 2022 her dream materialized, as the Zeta Iota Chapter was officially chartered. In respect of her dedication to the teaching and school counseling professions, as well as her steadfast and resolute support of Zeta Iota Chapter, The Gwendolyn Phillips Scholarship for Collegiate Students was created to honor her legacy.
